Mind Matters 2 - thank you
Sun, 07 Oct 2018
On behalf of the Club Executive, thanks to everyone who attended Mind Matters 2 last Thursday evening.

Thanks to our contributors on the night - Kenneth EganHannah Tyrrell and Prof Jim Lucey and our MC Tom Maher. The evening was kicked off with a welcome by Aoife O'Brien, GAA National Healthy Club Coordiantor who asked people to look beyond their physical health.

Kenneth Egan spoke honestly about his lack of self-belief during his boxing career and his relationship with alcohol.  Since his recovery 8 years ago, he told us that he takes it one day at a time and that he's a real person now. Now working as a counsellor, he warned people of spending too much time on social media and urged young people to keep talking to each other and if you had problem to share it with 1 person.

Hannah Tyrrell was called to a rugby squad and was unavailable to attend the event in person.  Disappointed to miss our event, Hannah recorded a personal video which was shown at the event.  Although a very successful sportswoman in her teenage years and excelling in both soccer and ladies football, Hannah told us about developing an eating disorder which also led to her self-harming.  Although she felt isolated, she eventually got help in St. Pats and slowly got on the road to recovery. She said that continuing to be involved in sport was a positive during these tough times. She finished by saying that there was light at the end of the tunnel and she didn't want other people to feel loneliness and isolation.

Finally Prof Jim Lucey asked us to talk about our mental health and to learn that we are all in this together.  He asked us to reach on our phones for '6 domains of resilience' and '5 ways to well-being'. Jim told us to 'do you ands and not your buts'!!

An event like this could not happen without a backroom team led by Trish Maher, the Plunketts Healthy Club Officer.  Trish was supported by the Healthy Club Committee, Martina Carroll, Lorraine McCormack, Grainne O'Connell, Michael Finn, Charlotte & John McLoughlin, Cathy Harrison, Allan Clarke and Dolores Madigan.

Thanks too to Joan Voakes for having the hall and seating setup while Noirin Boland and David McGeown helped with event logistics.  Ciaran Shannon, Eanna Boland, Oisin Boland and Tommy Hynes all helped to clear up the hall afterwards.

Finally thanks to Meaghers Pharmacy, Kinvara Park for supporting the club with our Healthy Club events and who provided a small good bag for all attendees.
